During our workshop, audience members will have a chance to play games and look at the many ways comedy is a Trojan horse that increases social health.

Rooted in Purpose, Driven by Possibility: The COELSC Story and What It Means for California School Counselors
Thursday September 10, 2026 10:30am - 11:30am PDT
What does it look like when county office leaders across California unite to advance the school counseling profession — with purpose, passion, and possibility at the forefront?

COELSC — County Offices of Education Leadership for School Counseling — is a statewide network of California County Office of Education (COE) administrators who provide leadership, technical assistance, and professional development for school counseling programs and services across K-12 districts. Founded in November 2017 by a coalition of Southern California COE administrators and state leaders in school counseling, COELSC was built on a singular conviction: that school counselors across California deserve a unified, data-informed, and equity-centered system of support.

Grounded in the ASCA National Model and the California Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework, COELSC provides county-level leaders with a collaborative infrastructure to consult, coordinate, and advocate — from supporting districts with supervision and training needs to providing input to the California Department of Education (CDE) and the Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) credentialing workgroup.

This session invites school counselors, district coordinators, and county office leaders to learn how COELSC is working statewide to elevate the school counseling profession, strengthen MTSS alignment, and drive policy advocacy on behalf of California students. Participants will explore how county-level collaboration translates into on-the-ground impact — and how they can connect with and leverage COELSC in their own professional communities.

Under Construction™: Adolescent Brain Development in Real Classrooms
Thursday September 10, 2026 10:30am - 11:30am PDT
Under Construction™: Adolescent Brain Development in Real Classrooms is a highly interactive session translating adolescent brain science into practical, educator‑ready strategies that improve behavior, engagement, and learning. The session begins by addressing a common challenge in middle and high schools: adolescent behavior is often misunderstood and punished rather than interpreted through a developmental lens shaped by brain maturation, stress sensitivity, and evolving executive functioning.

Participants are introduced to the BUILD™ Model—Belonging, Understanding risk‑reward systems, Impulse buffering, Learning through errors, and Dignity‑preserving accountability—as a framework for aligning instruction, discipline, and MTSS supports with how the adolescent brain develops. Brain myth‑versus‑fact polls engage participants in debunking common misconceptions and building shared understanding of impulse control, decision‑making, and emotional regulation.
Using real‑world school scenarios, participants engage in facilitated, small‑group problem solving to apply the BUILD™ framework to classroom responses, discipline decisions, and policy alignment while maintaining accountability and safety. Structured discussions explore how misaligned policies can unintentionally escalate adolescent behavior.

The session concludes with guided application and reflection, ensuring participants leave with ready‑to‑use tools, including a Decision‑Making Delay Tool, Risk‑vs‑Reward Interview Guide, and a Brain‑Aligned Discipline Planning Sheet. Grounded in evidence that brain‑aligned approaches improve self‑regulation and decision‑making, this session equips educators to respond to behavior with clarity and purpose while supporting mental well‑being as a foundation for learning.

From Prevention into Practice: Sustainable Approaches to Suicide Intervention
Thursday September 10, 2026 2:30pm - 2:30pm PDT
Many school systems have adopted suicide prevention policies, yet translating policy into consistent practice remains a challenge. This session highlights a proven, scalable approach developed by the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) that has supported more than 30 districts and charter schools in strengthening suicide intervention systems and informed California Assembly Bill 2003.

Participants will explore a structured, data-informed framework for moving from policy adoption to operational practice from this replicable model. Presenters will share lessons learned from partnering with local education agencies to align procedures with policy expectations, establish clear intervention pathways, create consistent responses across school sites, and build local capacity to sustain implementation over time.

This session will examine how local systems-improvement efforts helped inform California AB 2003, demonstrating how county-level innovation can influence statewide policy. The legislation advances suicide prevention efforts by requiring reporting of suicide risk screening data and mandating the development of free statewide suicide prevention training for students, staff, and families.

Participants will leave with access to SDCOE’s award-winning Policy to Practice Suicide Intervention Toolkit and implementation replication guide, featuring evidence-informed protocols, customizable templates, decision-making tools, and practical implementation resources. Attendees will gain insight into the key systems, tools, and conditions that support equitable and effective responses to students experiencing suicidal ideation.

From System to Student: A Collaborative, Countywide Approach to Building an Integrated System of Care
Thursday September 10, 2026 2:30pm - 3:30pm PDT
We are grateful to be part of a countywide effort, led by the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE), in partnership with CalOptima, Rady Children’s Health (formerly CHOC Behavioral Health), and Anaheim Elementary School District (AESD). Together, we are working to better support the behavioral health, social-emotional, and mental health needs of students and families across Orange County.
OCDE has played a key role in bringing partners together and helping us stay aligned. By connecting education with healthcare, managed care, and community-based organizations, they’ve created space for meaningful collaboration and shared problem-solving. This has allowed us to move beyond working in silos and toward a more coordinated approach.
In this session, we will share how this partnership has helped connect the bigger picture, policy, funding, and system coordination with what happens every day in schools. We’ll talk about how AESD has strengthened its Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and CYBHI Fee Schedule implementation through this collaborative work, and what we’ve learned along the way.
Together, we are building a more connected system that supports students across the full continuum from prevention and early intervention to crisis response, hospitalization, and returning to school. This work is ongoing, and it continues to grow through strong relationships, shared responsibility, and a commitment to doing better for students and families.
Participants will leave with practical insights into how partnerships across systems can come together in a more thoughtful and sustainable way to support schools and communities.

Going Analog in a Digital World
Thursday September 10, 2026 2:30pm - 3:30pm PDT
The challenge of fostering deep learning in 2026 is no longer a question of access to information, but of the brain’s ability to process it. This session bridges the gap between cognitive theory and classroom reality by examining how "analog" learning environments optimize the seat of executive function for memory encoding and cognitive endurance. While digital platforms prioritize speed and shallow consumption, they often fragment the attention required for long-term retention.

Educators are witnessing a "volatility of attention" driven by the digital landscape. Constant digital noise creates a cognitive load that bypasses the deep-work pathways of the brain, leading to high-frequency distraction and a decline in academic stamina.
By returning to "back-to-basics" analog methods, I align pedagogy with how the human brain actually processes, stores, and retrieves information. Replacing digital dependency with metacognitive agency allows students to transform reactive, screen-driven impulses into intentional, self-driven mastery.

Participants will explore a proven framework for shifting the burden of cognitive work from the device back to the student. This session moves beyond theory to share real-world applications of analog-rich environments that stabilize focus. Attendees will leave with a clear "map" for weaving brain science directly into their academic fabric, ensuring that deep learning and human connection remain at the helm of student success.

Its Bigger Than Burnout: Naming the SPIN That Keeps Us in Hustle Mode
Thursday September 10, 2026 2:30pm - 3:30pm PDT
Chronic stressors across every dimension of our lives, not just workplace demand, shape how we show up in the classroom and for ourselves. No matter how hard we try, a path out of hustle mode feels elusive. In a culture that keeps us teetering on burnout, what will help us anchor ourselves in sustainable practices that fit our lives, unravel shame, and find our way back to connection to ourselves, to others, and what we value most?

The SPIN cycle (Shame, Pressure, Isolation, Neglect) gives language to the forces that keep us in hustle mode despite our best efforts--especially those who are most impacted by systemic forces of inequity. Inclusive wellness offers a framework for addressing structural change and access to resources at the collective level, while supporting individual wellness in context, honoring how lived experience shapes unique wellness needs.

When we understand and address the SPIN in our own lives, we model what is possible for our students. Giving language to our own struggles helps our students to name their own without shame. Together, we work as a collective to create the conditions and structural support required to thrive, not just survive.

Due to the fast-paced format, there will be no formal Q&A, but we encourage you to connect with the speaker directly after the block to continue the conversation.

New research on California community schools finds that schools investing in a culture of belonging & connection are reducing chronic absenteeism and exclusionary discipline at accelerated rates compared to other schools.

Six years after the heart of the pandemic, student attendance and behavior challenges have not returned to pre-pandemic levels. Chronic absenteeism and behavior management issues remain top priorities for schools and drivers of educator burnout. It is clear that schools need new strategies, and new research points to the importance of belonging and building strong relationships as promising solutions. Focusing on consistent connection with students to feel seen and supported is both a preventative and proactive approach. When students feel they matter at school, they are more likely to want to attend and engage positively. Similarly, when we establish trust with students, we build the psychological safety necessary to identify the root causes of absenteeism and disruptive behavior before they escalate. This session will anchor on research, challenge attendees to rethink their toolkit for attendance and behavior, and give them some practical strategies to take belonging-based action this school year.

Sponsored Lighthouse Talk: Wellbeing Is Not a Program—It’s the Operating System for Learning
Thursday September 10, 2026 2:30pm - 3:30pm PDT
Join us for a dynamic 12-minute Lighthouse Talk, designed to showcase bold ideas, innovative practices, and inspiring stories shaping the future of student mental health and wellness. This presentation is one of four featured during this one-hour block. Due to the fast-paced format, there will be no formal Q&A, but we encourage you to connect with the speaker directly after the block to continue the conversation.

In population health, we don’t ask only who is sick—we ask what conditions are producing the outcomes we keep seeing. If wellbeing is the operating system, then leaders are not buying another app—they are deciding how the entire school system runs.

Schools too often treat wellbeing as isolated intervention. Outcomes are shaped by the system, not just the student. Implementation succeeds when the operating model is aligned. Build school communities where support is embedded, not fragmented.

Understanding Jewish Identity and Antisemitism
Thursday September 10, 2026 2:30pm - 3:30pm PDT
School leaders play a vital role in fostering communities where every student can learn, grow, and thrive. At their best, schools cultivate a healthy learning environment that is safe, inclusive, and pluralistic. That work has become increasingly complex, as broader social and political tensions increasingly surface in school communities.

We recognize that today’s administrators and educators are navigating sensitive issues around Jewish identity and antisemitism, often without the tools or support they need. Project Shema partners with schools to meet this moment with clarity, nuance, and compassion.

Grounded in advancing Jewish inclusion and addressing antisemitism, our work also strengthens wider efforts around equity, trust, and connection. We offer tailored frameworks that help leaders navigate difficult conversations, respond to tension, and build more connected, resilient communities.

This course is the integral part of a series of courses we offer to build a shared foundational understanding of the context of Jewish identity and how that fits into inclusion efforts. The session provides a comprehensive introduction and sets the foundation for deeper applied learning. Inclusion, belonging, mattering and understanding impact mental health for all faculty, staff, students and their families.

Breaking the Scroll: How a One-Week Social Media Silence Shifted Student Focus and Well-Being
Thursday September 10, 2026 3:45pm - 4:45pm PDT
In response to rising concerns about teen anxiety, distraction, and digital overload, the LBHS counseling team designed a data-informed Social Media Silence Challenge: a voluntary, five-day social media detox paired with structured reflection and pre/post data collection.

In this interactive session, participants will review data from the Social Media Silence at LBHS and how it impacted students’ attention, mood, sleep, compulsive checking behaviors, and awareness of their habits. Attendees will engage in a mini “digital habit audit,” self-reflect on what they are seeing on their campuses related to social media use, and collaborate in small groups to design an implementation plan for their individual school sites.

Participants will leave with ready-to-use tools, including survey templates, pre/post assessments, reflection journal prompts, communication scripts, and a launch guide to implement a Social Media Silence Week immediately. This session demonstrates how schools can facilitate critical dialogue across districts and communities regarding social media’s interconnected influence on student awareness and well-being.

Designed to Drift: Navigating Kids' Relationships with AI Chatbots
Thursday September 10, 2026 3:45pm - 4:45pm PDT
Talking to an AI chatbot can feel surprisingly personal. It agrees with you, asks how you're doing, sounds sure of itself, and acts like it already knows you. Those aren't accidents, they're design choices, and for developing minds, they can carry real risk.

This session connects the research on how these design features work, the specific vulnerabilities they create for students, and what school communities can do to help safeguard against potential harms. We'll start with identifying the conversational design features that drive that sense of connection before exploring the concept of relational drift: how trust and context shape what students are willing to share, and how a chatbot's design can quietly pull them toward something more personal than they set out for. Groups will work through hands-on activities, analyzing anonymized chatbot conversation profiles, placing them on the drift spectrum to build awareness of the red flags that signal a shift toward unhealthy dependence.

Attendees will leave having experienced Common Sense Media's new Digital Literacy & Well-Being Curriculum firsthand, with a clear understanding of the free, ready-to-use lessons they can bring directly into their classrooms and the professional development resources available to support educators in doing so.

Every Conversation Counts: How Peer to Peer Mental Health Clubs Support Youth Mental Health
Thursday September 10, 2026 3:45pm - 4:45pm PDT
Mental health is a critical concern for all youth, youth face challenges during critical stages of development that can deeply impact their mental health. This workshop will highlight how school-based peer to peer mental health clubs have proven to be an effective, low-cost, and sustainable solution to provide social, emotional, and mental health support for students. By allowing students to become mental health advocates on their campuses, students are able to create a community and reduce mental health stigma.

We will provide an overview of the Bring Change to Mind (BC2M) clubs on middle and high school campuses, and the importance of letting youth voices be heard. This workshop will also allow our youth mental health advocates to share on a panel about their experiences as advocates within their schools and communities, what they see as the biggest mental health challenges within their school communities, and what their clubs are doing to change the conversations around mental health.
We will end the presentation with a hands on activity led by our student leaders!

GoodforMEdia: Centering Youth Voice in the Development of Healthier Social Media and AI Strategies, Policies, and Technologies
Thursday September 10, 2026 3:45pm - 4:45pm PDT
In the midst of a global youth mental health crisis and rising concern over social media and AI’s contributions to this, emerge calls for legislation, lawsuits, and policy reform. But to what extent are the experiences and ideas of actual young people being considered and heard? In this session, GoodforMEdia youth leaders and staff will explain why youth voice must be at the forefront of these conversations, describe approaches to authentically centering youth voice, and provide tools to implement when working with young people to support a balanced relationship with tech.

GoodforMEdia is a youth-led platform that promotes healthy digital habits and safer tech design. GoodforMEdia harnesses the power of peers to influence and educate one another in positive ways; recognizing that the best people to help youth navigate social media well are those that can relate to young people’s daily experiences, both positive and negative. This youth-driven program has drawn upon youth wisdom and lived experiences to educate and motivate hundreds of youths, policymakers, and tech leaders in the U.S.

Woven with youth’s personal strategies and informed by lived experience, this interactive session presents ways to engage young people around their tech habits and encourage healthier and safer use. Participants will walk away with an understanding of the benefits and pitfalls youth are experiencing, and ways to support them through open, judgement free discussion. The team will provide examples of youth-designed activities and resources such as conversation cards, guides for parents, and other tools educators and supportive adults can use in their classrooms or in daily conversations.

The Choir Effect: Why Singing Together Creates Connection and Belonging
Thursday September 10, 2026 3:45pm - 4:45pm PDT
What happens when a room full of individuals starts singing together — and why can the effect feel so powerful?
Following the collective singing experience in the opening keynote, this interactive session explores the science and psychology behind singing together — and what it can teach us about supporting the wellbeing of young people.
James Sills will begin by exploring how singing can support the three interconnected pillars of health — physical, mental and social — before zooming out to examine the mechanisms that make collective singing so powerful: trust, participation, synchrony, psychological safety and belonging.
For educators and professionals working to support wellbeing in schools and colleges, the session will consider how these principles can help create environments where young people feel safer, more connected, more engaged and part of something bigger than themselves.
Drawing upon ideas from his first book, Do Sing, and introducing ideas from his upcoming book, The Choir Effect, James will combine research with stories and practical insights from schools, choirs, workplaces and communities — demonstrating how the lessons of the choir can reach far beyond music.

Session aims
Participants will:
  • Understand how singing can support the physical, mental and social health of young people
  • Explore how singing can support breathing, stress regulation, mood, confidence and emotional wellbeing
  • Consider how shared music can help address social isolation and disconnection and strengthen a young person’s sense of belonging
  • Discover the Icebreaker Effect and why strangers who sing together can bond surprisingly quickly
  • Understand how synchrony — coordinating our voices, breathing, attention and behaviour — can strengthen social bonds and move us from “me” towards “we”
  • Explore why active participation can create deeper connection than passive observation
  • Consider the importance of psychological safety, vulnerability and the stretch zone, particularly when inviting young people to participate
  • Explore how shared rituals, collective flow, collective joy and peak moments can strengthen groups and school communities
  • Translate these ideas beyond music into practical ways of creating greater trust, connection and belonging in schools and colleges

Winning Beyond the Game: Coaching Strategies that Strengthen Mental Health and Performance
Thursday September 10, 2026 3:45pm - 4:45pm PDT
This presentation equips coaches, athletic directors, educators, and school leaders with practical strategies to support student-athlete mental health while improving performance and long-term development. The session begins by examining the growing prevalence of anxiety and depression among adolescents and highlights the influential role coaches play in shaping athletes' confidence, resilience, and emotional well-being. It introduces key concepts from child and adolescent development, including Erikson's stages of psychosocial development, to explain how coaching impacts identity and self-esteem.

Participants engage in interactive discussions exploring how anxiety manifests in sports and the effects of negative or highly critical coaching environments. The presentation then shifts to evidence-based coaching practices that foster confidence, reduce anxiety, and create psychologically safe team cultures. Topics include providing descriptive feedback, emphasizing effort over outcomes, using constructive praise, and applying the "Support–Instruction–Encouragement" feedback model. The session concludes with actionable takeaways emphasizing that positive coaching environments not only enhance athletic performance but also contribute to healthy emotional development, increased motivation, and lifelong success both on and off the field.
